12 cloves. Yesterday, I risked twelve whole cloves of garlic, burying them in the neglected strip of marginal soil at the foot of our staircase. Oh, I'm sure there are several legitimate protests running through your mind right now ("But I'm wearing a winter coat!" "Doesn't she live in Chicago?" "Can garlic grow through three feet of snow?" "I'm too hungry/bored/sleepy/apathetic to plant anything right now!"). All legitimate concerns. But it's possible, my friends. And besides, this project meant a little bit more to me than all of that...
Hi! So you may be thinking, "Gee, the posts are a little infrequent lately, and I'm detecting a new look to Gen's food blog...I know! There aren't any pictures!" Yes, it's true, I can hide nothing from you omniscient readers. And no, I'm not trying to make a point about what art is or say that beauty is in the mind or anything like that (though I did consider both cop-outs, briefly :D ). Truth be told, my sweet little Canon is having personal troubles...she just can't seem to focus on anything...she has problems sharing her photos with others--especially with the Mac, who really hasn't done anything to deserve Canon's scorn. Yes, Canon is experiencing inner turmoil, the likes of which I just don't know how to fix. So together, we've made a decision to seek expert help for a peaceful resolution.
Have you ever had a day when you just felt lucky?

This happened to me a little over a week ago. The Boy and I decided to save our daily toil for night, by the lantern-like glow of our Mac, and play while the sun was out, so off we headed to our favorite thrift store, Brown Elephant, for an adventuresome sojourn.

To pick through old, dusty stuff indoors. Hey, I never said we wanted to play IN the sun--just while it was out. Do I LOOK like the kind of person who can handle UV exposure?

In the world of vegetables, eggplants are the ugly, forgotten sisters of more beautiful, glamorous, and dare-I-say promiscuous produce such as the cherry tomato (Such luscious color!) or the cucumber (So tall! So slender!). It's not that there's anything quite so unlikable about eggplant. It's just that collective unfamiliarity breeds ignorant attempts at preparing eggplant, rendering her mushy, spongy, greasy, slimy, and just plain not-in-the-mood. This wins no admirers for the eggplant.

But you can believe what you've heard about neglected ladies making eager bedfellows... (visit site for full post!)

There's pretentious food, and experimental food, and food you make to show off...but Macaroni and Cheese is none of these. I think I'd call it nostalgic, comforting face-stuffing food. You know what I'm talking about--food that takes you back, makes you feel young and low-maintenance again. Like peanut butter and jelly, for instance. Hot dogs and chips. A pile of pierogies (okay...maybe that one has less universal appeal). Yes, Macaroni and Cheese takes its place among all these most American (minus the pierogies) of food icons. Unfortunately, vegans and lactards and all manner of non-cheese-eaters are frequently left with poor substitutes. Damn shame.

What happens to a person who is denied the comfort foods of his or her youth? (Visit the site for the full post!)

Why? What did you think I meant?

Sometimes you're in the mood to impress everyone with a big show. You're willing to caramelize the onions, braise the roast, thinly slice the prosciutto, neatly lay the tomato slices out, massage the chicken until it feels ready, sweet-talk the turnips, and commit other forms of foodie foreplay, all in the name of a meal that makes a name for you. But sometimes, you want to throw some stuff in a pot, heat it 'til it's done, slosh it in a bowl, chuck a roll at your loved one's face, and call it dinner. You don't care if it doesn't make a name for you. Hell, it could give you a reputation for all you care...
